The Thames River Heritage Park and Connecticut Sea Grant are inviting people to solve a word puzzle while exploring historic sites in New London and Groton by completing one or more of the four Thames River Quests any time this summer.
Those who complete the quests can enter a prize drawing for heritage park T-shirts and water taxi tickets.
The quests have been offered as part of Connecticut Trails Day events on the first weekend in June in 2018 and 2019. This year, instead of group gatherings, Trails The Thames River Heritage Park will offer a special schedule for the hop-on hop-off water taxi service on Saturday, September 14 and Sunday, September 15, during the Connecticut Maritime Heritage Festival being held at Fort Trumbull and City Pier in New London.
The Water Taxi will operate continuous express water taxi service between Fort Trumbull and City Pier in New London and between Fort Trumbull and Thames River Landing in Groton from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
The Water Taxi will operate on a regular Thames River Heritage Park invites you to hop aboard one of our navy utility boats for a fascinating narrated 90-minute tour. You'll Hear about privateers, Battle of Groton Heights, Benedict Arnold and the burning of New London, the world’s first nuclear submarine, life on SUBASE New London and more.
For centuries our harbor has guarded the Thames River and entry to Long Island Sound, with Navy and Coast Guard installations, the ship building industries that support them, as well as two forts that have The Thames River Heritage Park is offering free weekend walking tours of historic downtown New London and Fort Trumbull. The tours are timed to coordinate with the water taxi schedule and designed to offer visitors more options to enhance their experience and more thoroughly understand the significant history and heritage of the park’s Thames River sites.
Fort Trumbull tours highlight the significance of the fort and the neighborhood from Colonial times through the Cold War. Downtown tours focus on general New London, CT – The Thames River Heritage Park Foundation (TRHPF) has received a grant from the Panoram Foundation for $30,000 for operational support and the development of collaborative efforts among the 17 sites that comprise the Park experience. A collection of national and historic sites and institutions on both shores of the Thames River linked by a seasonal water taxi, the Thames River Heritage Park is the only heritage park in Connecticut and operates as a 501(C) 3 non-profit organization.
“The New London, CT – The Thames River Heritage Park (TRHP) is requesting proposals from licensed commercial tour boat operators to provide water taxi shuttle service and boat tours linking historic sites in the Thames River estuary Memorial Day weekend through mid-September 2019 - 2021. The operator would utilize the two US Navy Willard utility boats owned by the TRHP.

This Five After Six promotion is to encourage more riders to use the water taxi to enjoy dinner and evening activities in downtown New London. “Although our ridership is up significantly as compared to last year, Sunday evenings are not as busy as we’d like to see,” says Thames River Heritage New London, CT – Launching for the season on Friday, May 25, 2018, the Thames River Heritage Park Water Taxi will be extending its operating hours on Friday and Saturday nights to accommodate riders crossing the river for dinner and evening events. The new hours are Friday noon to 10 PM, Saturday 10 AM to 10 PM. and Sunday and holidays 10 .AM. to 9 PM through September 16, 2018.
In addition, service to Fort Trumbull will stop at 7 p.m. and will run between City Pier and Thames River Landing every twenty Registration is now open for the Thames River Quest, a free, three-part, treasure hunt-style educational hike for all ages created by Connecticut Sea Grant and the Thames River Heritage Park as a new, unique offering for Connecticut Trails Day on June 2.

Now in its second season the water taxis will begin operation Friday, May 26, 2017. The service connects Fort Trumbull in New New London, CT – The Thames River Heritage Park is looking for volunteers who want to create positive and memorable experiences for visitors and residences who ride the Water Taxi and who visit the local heritage sites within the Park. Volunteers are needed Friday – Sunday beginning Memorial Day weekend through mid-September in 2- and 4-hour shifts between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
Volunteers will be Park Ambassadors who will be stationed at the three Water Taxi landing sites in New London and Groton to provide New London, CT – The Thames River Heritage Park water taxi service on the Thames River will begin its second season of operation Friday, May 26, 2017. The service connects Fort Trumbull in New London to the downtown New London Historic Waterfront District and Fort Griswold in Groton, and runs Friday through Sunday from 10 AM to 9 PM. until September 17, 2017 .
The water taxis are authentic Navy launches formerly used to transport servicemen and women from larger ships to shore. They are the central New London, CT – Jacalyn Dietrich, President of The Thames River Water Taxi has announced a limited schedule of tours of the Thames River as an “end of season” special.
On August 27 and 28, and September 3, 4, 17 and 18, River Tours at 10:30am and Sunset Tours at 5:30pm will be run. All tours will depart from Pier 7 at Ft. Trumbull. Prices for the River Tours are $20 for adults, $15 for children 3-12 and Active Duty Military, and $16 for Seniors (65+). Sunset Tours are $23 for adults, $17 for Children
New London, CT – The Board of Directors of the newly established Thames River Heritage Park Foundation (TRHPF) will host a ceremony to celebrate the launch of Water Taxi Service on the Thames River Sunday July 3 at Pier 7, Fort Trumbull State Park, from 3:00 to 4:00 PM. The taxi service will be operated by The Thames River Water Taxi LLC of Voluntown, CT using two surplus US Navy launches acquired by the City of Groton, with structural and cosmetic work provided by Crocker’s Boat Yard in New London.
